GLOBAL WIND LEADERS LAUNCH ILLINOIS WIND ENERGY ASSOCIATION
Wind For Illinois Will Be The Voice Of Wind Power In The Prairie State
Several of the world's largest wind energy companies announced today the formation of Wind for Illinois, a non-profit trade association working to expand clean, emissions-free wind power in the state of Illinois.
As this renewable energy resource becomes more important to the state's economy, Wind for Illinois (WFI) will be the voice of wind power in the state, providing important data and expert analysis to the General Assembly, the Governor's office, state agencies, local government and the public. WFI will also be a valuable informational resource for state and regional media outlets.
Wind for Illinois officially launched today at the 2nd annual Advancing Wind Power in Illinois conference hosted by the Illinois Wind Working Group and Illinois State University. WFI is also a conference sponsor.
"As more and more wind farms are built across our state, Wind for Illinois will be wind power's strongest advocate," said WFI Executive Director Kevin Borgia. "Through this organization, Illinois residents and wind developers can work together to help bring more wind generation to their communities."
"Wind farms are good for Illinois," Borgia said. "Wind generation can bring millions of dollars in local tax revenue that can fund our schools, improve local infrastructure, create well-paying jobs and help revitalize rural economies. Wind power is also a strong energy source from the corn fields of the Midwest, not the oil fields of the Mideast."
Illinois is a major growth market for the wind industry, and WFI's founding members include many of the biggest players in the wind sector, such as Horizon Wind Energy, Babcock & Brown, Iberdrola, BP Alternative Energy, E.On, Invenergy, Navitas, EcoEnergy and others. WFI offices will be in Chicago.
Wind for Illinois is the only trade association for the wind industry in the state. The group works in conjunction with its national counterpart, the American Wind Energy Association, as well as regional advocate Wind on the Wires, but WFI is not directly affiliated with these groups. WFI also collaborates with the Department of Energy-sponsored Illinois Wind Working Group, as well as prominent environmental groups such as the Environmental Law and Policy Center, the Illinois League of Conservation Voters, the Sierra Club and the Illinois Environmental Council.
In conjunction with these strong partners, Wind for Illinois will advocate for policies that incentivize rapid and responsible development of the state's wind energy resources. The WFI Board of Directors is now in the process of developing the group's policy platform.
